Tispr Stories: Gino Campagna is Cooking Up Smiles

Every Friday we check in with a freelancer or small business person who is following their dreams and doing what they love. This week, we’ll hear from Gino Campagna, an Italian chef who brought his knowledge of cooking, background in education, and experience working with children to the great art of cooking.

Here’s what Gino had to say about food IQ’s, cooking, and bringing joy to kids through food.

Tell us a little about yourself & what you do.

I’m not a restaurant Chef, my background is in education and I apply my experience working with children to the great art of cooking. My mission is to put American families back in the kitchen.

Why you do what you do?

When I came to America, I noticed that the Food IQ of American children was way lower than their Italian counterpart. We live in one of the richest country in the world, but when it comes to our children, we treat them as second class citizens. I think our children deserve better.

How did you get into cooking?

I’m Italian, so wherever I go I’m expected to cook! Cooking comes naturally to me, and our house is always filled with guests having fun around the dining table.

How you feel when you’re working, doing what you love?

I love working with children. I relate to kids and get energized when I’m around them. I could not think of any other job.

What it's like being in your line of work?

Doing what I do for a living is a lot of fun. Wherever I go, whatever I do, my main goal is to bring a smile to the face of everybody.

What you've learned from being a chef?

Everybody loves you if you can cook! You’re the most popular guy to visit. On the other hand, working as a chef in a restaurant can be a very stressful and demanding job.

What’s something you’ve done in your career that you’re exceptionally proud of?

I’m very proud to have participated in the groundbreaking reality show “Born This Way” on A&E. It’s a show that chronicles the lives of seven wonderful individuals with Down Syndrome. I’ve been a little part of their success in the first three seasons—look out for season four, coming out soon.  In the first episode the seven protagonists come and cook in my kitchen and I show them my new book: Chef Gino Taste Test Challenge.
