Tispr Stories: G. Madison IV is Dancing With Purpose

Every Friday we check in with a freelancer or small business person who is following their dreams and doing what they love. Today we’ll hear from G. Madison, a dancer, choreographer, TV host, creative director and movement coach who has performed all over the world. He’s danced on stage with Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna, been in music videos for artists including Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar, and been featured in film and commercials. In addition to his own performances, G. Madison brings his professional know-how and passion behind the scenes, as a stage coach and choreographer.

Here’s what G. Madison had to say about his love of movement, expressing himself through art, and how dance has changed his life.

Who you are as a person or what makes Grandison…Grandison?

That’s a big question to answer....hahaha! I’m a son! I'm a proud uncle to three kids from my deceased older brother. I’ve been married for 5 years to an amazing girl, @chenelleworld. I’m a workaholic, I don't multitask very well and I always have multiple creative projects circulating my brain and calendar at once and I LOVE IT! I’m secretly a loner but I love people; motivating them and inspiring them to see themselves as greater than they see themselves.

Why do you do what you do?

I do what I do because I know that this world would be even more beautiful if we all did what we love, not what we are told to love. And I’m passionate about people living out their dreams!

How did you get into dancing and choreography and how long have you been doing both?

I've been dancing since the first time I heard music. But dancing with a purpose for about 16 years (professionally for over 10 years). Choreography came to me very early since my first dance coach/choreographer asked me to teach the new dancers as they became a part of the group, and soon after that I was asked to create a few steps. It came easily to me because it was necessary in the moment, not because it was forced.

How is it teaching others your choreography and watching your dancing come to life?

My choreography for stage and live shows including the movement direction for performing artists is a different type of high. ART IS POWER.

“From DANCE I have learned to love many cultures through the travel and experiences I’ve had all around the world.”

How do you feel when you’re working, doing what you love?

It’s so huge and empowering watching my direction and choreography create emotion and feeling from within the performers; especially with the audience watching. ART IS EXPRESSION.

What’s it like being in your line of work?

I'm surrounded by people who care more about themselves than the art they are on this earth to share so it can be frustrating to see but I also feel super grateful to be able to make a living from sharing art and empowering other artists to do the same...and more!

What have you learned/gained from dancing?

From DANCE I have learned to love many cultures through the travel and experiences I’ve had all around the world because of the FUN, LOVE and CREATIVITY I’ve been able to bring to all kinds of people!

What have you learned from choreography?

From CHOREOGRAPHY, over the years it has opened my eyes to many many many different types of MUSIC and ART. There are no boundaries!

“I do what I do because I know that this world would be even more beautiful if we all did what we love, not what we are told to love.”

How have dancing and choreography changed your life?

They have opened my eyes to more of the world than I’ve ever imagined…food, language, culture, love, travel, health, risk taking and life experience. Dance and choreography are both great friends that continue to teach me so much.

If you could give your younger self a piece of advice, what would it be?

I would tell myself to STRETCH! The body can lift you up and drag you down; keep it ready for anything!

What has been your most memorable project to work on?

My most memorable project to date has been becoming one of the choreographers and lead dancers for the Mariah Carey team, helping to create and perform in shows around the globe!
